What Is Team Based Pickleball?
Team based pickleball is the ATPL format: you play for a roster, not a pickup game. Here is how the match works and why every player can change the result.
Team based pickleball vs. open play
Most people find pickleball through open play, paddle up play, local round robins organized by friends or clubs, or pick-up games. That’s a fun way to get a game, but league play brings a whole new perspective.
Team based pickleball is the opposite model: you roster a team, dress a lineup, and compete through a season of matches. You’ll compete with new pickleball players, often at new venues, in a fun two- to three-hour league experience. Wins belong to the team. Standings are public. Captains make lineup choices. The lowest-rated player on the court can still swing the match.
How an ATPL match is built
ATPL team based pickleball uses a format designed so every round matters.
- 10–14 players on a roster, with a captain and co-captain
- Six players dress for each match as three doubles pairs
- 3 rounds of two games each
- Two games to 11 (win by 2) in each round
- 2 points for a game win, 1 point if you score 6 or more
- Highest team total wins the match
Who it is for
Divisions are organized by skill, age, and gender so you are matched against comparable competition. Typical play spans 2.5, 3.0, 3.5, 4.0, 4.5/5.0, with 18+, 50+, and 65+ age groups at national pickleball events.
You do not need a full roster in your pocket to start. Some players join with a team already formed; others register individually and get placed by the local league.
Why the format scales nationally
Because every affiliate uses the same team-based format, scoring, and rating algorithm, a season in Arizona looks the same as a season in Florida. That consistency makes the National Championships fair and competitive, with state champions and qualifying teams arriving already fluent in the format and at a comparable skill level.
Rally, the official ATPL platform, is how those seasons actually run — handling registration, scheduling, scoring, standings, and player ratings for this team model.
